About the Grammy Awards

Of all the Grammys, four are considered the big ones: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. They are the ones listed in the history on this page.

They are presented by the Recording Academy, whose members — musicians, producers and sound engineers — vote for the winners. The first ceremony took place in 1959, and the show is usually held in early February in Los Angeles.

Two of them are easy to mix up: Record of the Year rewards a specific performance and its production team, while Song of the Year goes to the songwriters.
