🌐 Our history
ChatZona was born in 2007 as an IRC chat portal designed for Spanish speakers. When social networks were barely an experiment and smartphones didn't yet exist, we were already connecting people from Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and all of Latin America through the most active chat channels on the web.
More than 17 years later, we're still here. While dozens of chat portals have disappeared, ChatZona has survived and evolved, combining the reliability of the IRC protocol with a modern portal offering content, entertainment and community.
Today we are the longest-running Spanish-language chat portal on the internet. And in this industry, that's an achievement very few can boast.

💬 IRC chat: simple and reliable
Our chat system is based on IRC (Internet Relay Chat), the most veteran instant messaging protocol on the internet, created in 1988 and still used by millions of people worldwide.
IRC channels have a key advantage over other systems: they are lightweight, fast, and require no accounts or sign-up. You join with a nickname, choose your room and start talking. That simple — just like in 2007.
Our IRC server (irc.chatzona.org) is active 24 hours a day. You can access it from the browser through our web widget, or directly with any compatible IRC client.

ChatZona is designed for everyone who shares Spanish as a language. Our channels cover all Spanish-speaking countries in the world, from Spain to Argentina, through Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, Peru and all 21 Spanish-speaking countries on the planet.

Beyond the chat, ChatZona offers daily updated content designed for Spanish speakers. Everything is generated automatically through artificial intelligence and real-time data APIs, so there's always something new to read.
✍️ Editorial policy
ChatZona's editorial content is produced with the assistance of large language models (Anthropic Claude and, as fallbacks, open models via Groq and OpenRouter) combined with free, verifiable data sources. We follow a clear set of principles to keep what we publish trustworthy and useful:
- Verifiable sources first. News articles are written only from real agency feeds (AP, Reuters, EFE, BBC, RTVE and others) and cite the sources used at the foot of each article. Sports standings, weather, currencies and stock prices come from public APIs (football-data.org, Open-Meteo, Frankfurter, Finnhub).
- No fabrication. We never invent quotes, statistics, events or accusations about real people. If a fact cannot be verified against a primary source, it is not published.
- Human oversight. Automatically drafted content is reviewed and corrected, and any reader can report an error at our contact page; corrections are applied promptly.
- Transparency. Every article shows its publication and last-updated date. Content that is AI-assisted is acknowledged here openly.

ChatZona is a Spanish platform subject to the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Spanish data protection law (LOPD-GDD).
We do not require registration to access the chat, which minimises personal data collection. When you subscribe to our newsletter, we only ask for your email and explicit consent, and you can always unsubscribe with one click.
