About the MTV Video Music Awards

The MTV Video Music Awards were created in 1984 to reward music videos, when MTV was barely three years old. The first ceremony was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

The trophy is an astronaut on the Moon, based on the first image MTV ever broadcast; it was called the Moonman until 2017, when it was renamed the Moon Person. The show takes place in late summer.

The history on this page covers Video of the Year, the main award, and Artist of the Year.
