Kendrick Lamar is the most important rapper of his generation and one of the most significant artists in contemporary popular culture. Born in Compton, California, in 1987, his artistic vision blends street-level documentary, jazz, funk, spoken word and biblical allegory in a way that no hip-hop artist before him had achieved.
good kid, m.A.A.d city (2012) is a narrative masterpiece depicting a day in the life of a teenager in Compton. To Pimp a Butterfly (2015) — a sprawling, jazz-and-funk-saturated meditation on Black identity, capitalism and fame — is widely considered the greatest hip-hop album of its decade. DAMN. (2017) won the Pulitzer Prize for Music: the first time the prize was awarded to a non-classical, non-jazz work.
His 2024 feud with Drake — culminating in Not Like Us — was one of the most discussed hip-hop events in years. He performed at the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show to critical acclaim. His cultural authority remains unmatched in his generation.
