To Pimp a Butterfly
📖 About this album
Third studio album by Kendrick Lamar, released in 2015. A politically charged and sonically adventurous record rooted in jazz, funk and spoken word, examining race, fame and identity in America. Widely considered one of the defining hip-hop albums of the 2010s.
📝 Our review
To Pimp a Butterfly is one of the great records of the last twenty years, not just in rap. Kendrick channelled his internal conflict around fame, Black identity and systemic violence into jazz, funk and spoken word. The production from Flying Lotus, Thundercat and others creates an unmatched sonic ecosystem. "Alright" and "King Kunta" are anthems; "u" is gut-wrenching. It demands attention and rewards it enormously.
