About the European Film Awards (EFA)
The European Film Awards honour film from the whole continent rather than from a single country. They have been presented since 1988 by the European Film Academy, which is based in Berlin.
The first ceremony took place on 26 November 1988 at the Theater des Westens, in the western half of the city. The winners are voted by the Academy's members, several thousand film professionals from across Europe.
The history on this page covers European Film and the directing and acting awards. The 38th edition was held on 17 January 2026 instead of in December, which is why it appears as the 2026 edition and there is no 2025 edition.
