About the César Awards

France's national film awards are named after the sculptor César Baldaccini, and the trophy is one of his compressed-metal sculptures, the technique that made him famous.

They are presented by the French Academy of Cinema Arts and Techniques (Académie des arts et techniques du cinéma), and the first ceremony took place in Paris on 3 April 1976. It is held every year in late February or early March.

The 2020 edition is remembered more for what happened off the list of winners. The Academy's board resigned en masse two weeks before the ceremony, and when Roman Polanski won Best Director for An Officer and a Spy, the actress Adèle Haenel walked out of the ceremony.
