About the Cannes Film Festival
At Cannes the prizes are not voted by an academy: they are decided by a jury that changes every year and is chaired by a leading film figure.
The festival was created in 1939, but the Second World War forced that first edition to be cancelled, and the festival did not properly begin until 1946. It takes place every May in Cannes, on the French Riviera.
The top award is the Palme d'Or, created in 1955; it is followed by the Grand Prix and the Jury Prize. In 2023 a record seven women directors competed in the official selection, and the Palme d'Or went to Justine Triet for Anatomy of a Fall.
