Dheepan

Dheepan is not just another film about refugees. It's a sucker punch disguised as a social drama. Three strangers — a former Tamil guerrilla, a woman, and an orphan girl — invent a family to escape Sri Lanka and land in the Parisian suburbs. What starts as a bureaucratic procedure turns into a trap: the neighborhood they're assigned to is a hotbed of drug dealers, and their apartment is a pressure cooker between two fires.

Director Jacques Audiard doesn't mince words. The camera follows Dheepan (Antonythasan Jesuthasan) as if it were a documentary, but with the tension of a thriller. There's no epic music or grandiose speeches; just the sound of gunfire, the smell of burned trash, and the uncomfortable silence of someone who knows they don't belong anywhere. The Golden Palm at Cannes (2015) was not a prize out of pity, but for daring to show violence without filters: neither the war they left behind nor the one that awaits them in Europe.

What hurts is not the ending — predictable, harsh — but how Audiard portrays survival. The girl (Kalieaswari Srinivasan) doesn't cry when she sees a corpse; she just asks if she can keep the shoes. The mother (Yalini) pretends normalcy while washing dishes with hands that have buried too many people. And Dheepan, the man who risked everything for a passport, discovers that peace is not signed on paper. It's earned — or lost — on the stairs of a housing block where no one saves you.

This is not a film about migration. It's about what's left when the state fails, neighbors become enemies, and the only family you have is the one you invented to survive.
