Rural Ireland, 1981. Cait is a reserved nine‑year‑old girl who is neglected by her poor, dysfunctional, and overly large family. She silently confronts difficulties at school and at home, and has learned to remain unnoticed by those around her. When summer arrives and her mother's due date approaches, Cait is sent to live with distant relatives. Uncertain when she will return home, she stays in the house of strangers with nothing but the clothes she wears. Gradually, and thanks to the care of the Kinsella family, Cait makes remarkable progress and discovers a new way of living. But in this house where affection reigns and secrets seem absent, she uncovers a painful truth.
