Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll (Barranquilla, Colombia, 1977) is the most successful Colombian artist in history and one of the icons of global pop over the last 30 years. She signed her first record contract at 13 and rose to fame in Latin America with Pies Descalzos (1995) and ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones? (1998) before crossing over to the English-speaking market with Laundry Service (2001), which included the global hit Whenever, Wherever.
Throughout her career she has sold over 80 million albums, won 3 Grammys, 12 Latin Grammys and performed at two FIFA World Cup opening ceremonies. She is the best-selling Colombian artist and one of the best-selling artists in Latin music history.
In 2023, her collaboration with producer Bizarrap — BZRP Music Session #53 — broke global Spotify records on its first day, generating worldwide media coverage and becoming one of the most discussed songs of the year. She is also known for her humanitarian work through the Pies Descalzos Foundation, which has benefited thousands of children in Colombia.
