Donde Están los Ladrones marked Shakira's coming of age as a songwriter and international artist. Recorded partly after her notebooks with lyrics were stolen, the album has a real urgency felt in tracks like "Ciega Sordomuda" or "Tú." The production, handled by Gustavo Santaolalla among others, blends rock, pop and cumbia touches without forcing coherence. The result is more mature and uneven than Pies Descalzos, but at its best it's unmatched.
