Liga MX — what it is and how it works

Liga MX is the Mexican top flight and the best-attended club competition in the Americas. Unlike European leagues it runs two tournaments per calendar year — Apertura and Clausura — each with its own champion, which multiplies the number of decisive matches.

Format and competition system

Eighteen teams play a 17-round regular phase per tournament; the best-placed sides reach the liguilla, a two-legged knockout bracket ending in the final.

Club América tops the championship list, followed by Guadalajara, Toluca and Cruz Azul.
