Vuelta a España — what it is and how it works
La Vuelta is Spain's major stage race and the last of the three Grand Tours of the season. Run between August and September, its route is famous for short, explosive summit finishes such as the Angliru and Lagos de Covadonga.
Format and competition system
21 stages over three weeks. The overall leader has worn the red jersey since 2010, replacing the traditional gold.
Honours and dominant teams
Roberto Heras has the most overall wins, followed by Alberto Contador, Tony Rominger and Primož Roglič.
