Giro d'Italia — what it is and how it works
The Giro d'Italia is the season's first Grand Tour and the toughest in weather terms: held in May, its Dolomite stages are often raced in snow or rain on passes above 2,000 metres.
Format and competition system
21 stages over three weeks. The leader wears the maglia rosa, the colour of La Gazzetta dello Sport, the newspaper that organised the first edition in 1909.
