Tour de France — what it is and how it works
The Tour de France is the biggest race in cycling. Held every July since 1903, it covers around 3,500 kilometres over 21 stages, with the Alps and the Pyrenees deciding the general classification.
Format and competition system
21 stages over three weeks with two rest days. The yellow jersey marks the overall leader, green the points classification, polka dot the mountains and white the best young rider.
