World Athletics Championships — what it is and how it works
The World Athletics Championships is the sport's biggest event outside the Olympic Games. Held since 1983, it gathers federations from around the world at a single venue for nine or ten days of track, field, race walking and marathon competition.
Format and competition system
Held every two years in odd years, with heats, semi-finals and finals on the track, and direct or standard-based qualification in the field events.
Honours and dominant teams
The United States lead the all-time medal table by a wide margin, followed by Kenya, Russia and Jamaica.
