Special is Lizzo betting on classic R&B when she seemed set to stay in the lane of positive pop and danceable self-help. The album has warmer production than her previous work and more vulnerable songs. «About Damn Time» is a perfect hit, but «Special» and «Grrrls» reveal an artist with more depth than her singles suggested. The media climate of that year did the album no favours.
