My 21st Century Blues is Raye rescuing her career from the grip of a label and making the album she always wanted. Soul, jazz and R&B mix with lyrics addressing abuse, trauma and resilience from a personal perspective that makes no concessions to the market. «Escapism.» was already a hit before the album. Uneven in its second half but impressive overall: an artist who refused to be a product.
