Love of Lesbian

When the first chord of “Bajo el Volcán” exploded in the small Razzmatazz room, the audience's sweat mixed with the stage lights and, instantly, it was clear that Love of Lesbian was not just another Barcelona indie band. Formed in 1995 by Santi Balmes, Julián Saldarriaga, Joan Ramírez, Jordi Roig and Marc Ros, the group combines Brit‑pop, shoegaze and orchestral arrangements, while their lyrics explore melancholy, the passage of time and identity with a voice that seems taken from a novel. In my view, that fusion of sounds and words is what has allowed them to build the most solid career in Spanish alternative rock of the past two decades.

Discographies such as El poeta Halley (2009), La noche eterna (2010) and El mundo es un puzzle irresoluble (2023) have become mandatory milestones for any fan of Spanish‑language indie. Each project not only shows ambitious production, but also a visual concept cared for in detail, and has generated a community of followers—the "lovers" or "LdL"—who follow each release with a devotion that borders on ritual. It is no coincidence that these albums appear on essential‑list lists; their ability to blend the introspective with catchy melodies creates an experience that, honestly, few groups manage to reproduce.

2020 marked a before and after when Love of Lesbian filled the WiZink Center in Madrid, becoming the first Spanish indie band to conquer that stage. In a market dominated by urban and pop, that night proved that Spanish alternative rock has a massive and loyal audience, ready to fill stadiums and chant every verse. The audience's energy, which kept singing, confirmed that the band remains a vital force within the Hispanic music scene.
