About Tamaulipas Chat

Tamaulipas is a long state with two very different halves, and #tamaulipas brings them together: the Río Bravo border up north — Reynosa, Matamoros, Nuevo Laredo — and the Huasteca in the south, past the Tropic of Cancer, with Tampico, Ciudad Madero and Altamira. In between sits the capital, Ciudad Victoria, home of the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas.

Nobody is in #tamaulipas yet. Joining from this page also puts you in the Mexico room, which is active around the clock, and the new Tampico and Reynosa rooms open #tamaulipas as well, so this is where the north and south of the state will meet.

Border talk revolves around the factories and the crossings — Nuevo Laredo, facing Laredo, Texas, handles a large share of trade with the US, which is why it is called the customs capital. The south has the port and the Ciudad Madero refinery, the only one in the state, and the southwest the El Cielo Biosphere Reserve, with black bears, ocelots and military macaws, and the monarch butterfly passing through. The state's name comes from Huastec, via the Tamaholipa mission, and replaced Nuevo Santander when the state was created in 1824.

Border municipalities change their clocks with Texas; the rest of the state keeps central Mexico time all year. Neighbouring rooms: Nuevo León and Veracruz.
