Master of Puppets is the album where Metallica perfected their formula before commercial success softened it. Colossal riffs, time changes that defy passive listening, lyrics about addiction and war with more bite than most metal of the era. The title track runs over eight minutes and not a second is wasted. Cliff Burton was still alive when they recorded it. That matters.
