📖 Biography
The Beatles are the most important and influential band in the history of popular music. Formed in Liverpool in 1960 by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, in just ten years they produced a body of work that permanently altered Western popular culture. They are the best-selling music artists of all time, with estimated sales of over 600 million records.
Beginning with Merseybeat and rock and roll, they evolved through styles no one had previously combined: Baroque pop, Indian raga, avant-garde tape loops, and sophisticated orchestral pop. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) is widely considered the first concept album. Abbey Road (1969) is regularly cited as one of the greatest albums ever made.
Their influence extends far beyond music: they changed the relationship between artists and record labels, pioneered the rock concept album and the music video, and through their 1964 US tour launched the British Invasion that transformed pop culture on both sides of the Atlantic. Their legacy is still audible in virtually every genre of popular music today.
