Sgt. Pepper's has spent decades bearing the weight of being labelled the greatest album ever made, which does it no favours. That said, its ambition remains extraordinary: The Beatles invented a fictional collective persona to free themselves and explored the studio as an instrument. «A Day in the Life» alone justifies any superlative. The middle sections are more uneven than mythology admits.
