Halloween

On Halloween night in 1963, young Michael Myers murders his sister in Haddonfield, Illinois. Fifteen years later, he escapes from the psychiatric hospital and returns to his hometown in search of new victims, pursuing young Laurie Strode. John Carpenter filmed in 1978 for $300,000 the movie that invented the rules of the slasher: the immortal villain, the final girl, the killer's subjective camera, and the music that never leaves.

Halloween invented the rules of the slasher and its synthesizer music is the leitmotiv of the genre. Carpenter achieved this with a fraction of his contemporaries' budget. It worked because the fear was of the inhuman in the everyday.
