The Good Boss

White, impeccable, Julián Blanco's (Javier Bardem) suit shines under the factory lights. He's no ordinary boss: he's the perfect boss, or so he thinks. *The Good Boss* (2021), by Fernando León de Aranoa, is not just a film about an entrepreneur who goes to great lengths to please everyone —employees, inspectors, even his own conscience—, but a distorting mirror of how power corrupts without getting its hands dirty.

The film, awarded three Goya Awards (Best Film, Director, and Actor), moves between black comedy and social drama with surgical precision. Bardem doesn't play Blanco; he embodies him. His calculated smile, his gestures of false closeness, his talent for turning each conflict into an opportunity for manipulation... Everything about him exudes a self-satisfaction that borders on the pathetic. And yet, the script —as sharp as a razor— manages to make the viewer oscillate between laughter and shivering. León de Aranoa, a master of collective portraiture, turns the factory into a microcosm where each character is a pawn on Blanco's chessboard. Is *The Good Boss* a critique of capitalism? Undoubtedly. But it's also a character study, a radiography of the loneliness of power. The film doesn't judge —or at least not obviously—, but exposes the seams of a man who confuses leadership with control. And that's what hurts: that we all, at some point, have been a bit like Blanco. Or have wanted to be.
