Unamuno invented metafiction before it had a name: Augusto Pérez discovers he is a fictional character and goes to argue about it with his creator. The conceit is brilliant and philosophically serious — the problem of existence, the illusion of will — though the novelistic construction creaks at times. More interesting as an experiment than as a conventional novel. Essential reading for understanding twentieth-century Spanish literature and for anyone who enjoys games between reality and fiction.
