Dogs of Summer

Abreu wrote in the Canarian Spanish of her childhood, and the result is one of the most original debuts in Spanish fiction of 2020. The intensity of the friendship between the two girls, the neighbourhood, the summer, the body beginning to change: everything is filtered through a voice that does not try to explain, only to show. It may disorient readers unfamiliar with island speech patterns, but that is also part of the proposition. A small, very alive book — one remembered for its voice more than its plot.
