Delibes captures with almost painful precision the gaze of a child who doesn't yet know he is losing something forever. Daniel, el Mochuelo, sees his village with eyes that mix annoyance and love, and the reader feels that ambivalence as their own. Short, perfectly constructed, with a sense of the Castilian landscape no other author has equalled. For those unfamiliar with Delibes, this is the ideal entry point: in a hundred pages he says everything about himself.
