Zafón closes his tetralogy with craft and generosity. Alicia Gris is his most fully realized character: intelligent, damaged and with more layers than the previous protagonists of the series. The labyrinth ties up many threads from the Cemetery of Forgotten Books and that gives particular satisfaction to readers of the whole saga. Not the most subtle book in the world, but Zafón's Francoist Barcelona is a setting that never tires and the pace does not flag across its seven hundred pages.
