Setterfield builds a setting of books, fireplaces and secrets with considerable craft, and the dying writer narrating her true story has a seductive voice. The central mystery resolves less surprisingly than promised, but the journey there is worth it for readers who enjoy atmospheric narrative and stories within stories.
