The Angel's Game
📖 Synopsis
A cursed writer accepts a commission from a diabolical publisher in 1920s Barcelona. The prequel to The Shadow of the Wind.
It works better as a prequel than as a standalone novel. Ruiz Zafón deploys the same gothic machinery as the first instalment — dark Barcelona, the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, the ornate style — but the protagonist is less sympathetic and the whole feels more predictable. Even so, for fans of the author's universe it is essential and the atmosphere does not disappoint. Read La sombra del viento first; in any other order it loses half its meaning.
