Pérez-Reverte turned his love of rare books, Dumas, and grimoires into a bibliophile adventure novel with the pace of a thriller and the erudition of an essay. Lucas Corso, a hunter of first editions, drags the reader through Lisbon, Madrid, and Paris with an intrigue mixing Richelieu from The Three Musketeers with something considerably darker. It can feel somewhat overloaded, but for lovers of books and literary culture it is an almost private pleasure.
