The Nikkei 225 is Japan's most widely followed stock market index, tracking 225 blue-chip companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Created in 1950, it includes global companies such as Toyota, Sony, SoftBank, Honda and MUFG. Unlike most global indices, the Nikkei 225 is a price-weighted average. It breached its 1989 all-time high for the first time in 2024.
