Enel is an Italian multinational electricity and gas utility. First established as a public body in 1962, it was converted into a joint-stock company in 1992 and partially privatised in 1999 following the liberalisation of Italy's electricity market. The Italian state, through the Ministry of Economy and Finance, remains the largest single shareholder.
