Thriller is the best-selling album in history and there are concrete reasons for that, not just marketing. Quincy Jones's production is impeccable: pop, funk, rock and electronics coexisting without friction. "Billie Jean" has one of the most recognisable basslines ever recorded; "Beat It" brought in Eddie Van Halen; "Thriller" invented the music video as cultural event. Jackson was at the absolute peak of his powers.
