Linger Awhile was 2022's vocal jazz revelation: Samara Joy, barely twenty-two at the time of recording, displayed technique and swing that recall the greats of the bebop era. Her interpretations of standards like "Stardust" and "Nostalgia in Times Square" prove she's not imitating but inhabiting the repertoire. The production, acoustic and unornamented, does the right thing: gets out of the way.
