Gal Costa (Debut)
📖 About this album
Gal Costa debut album, released in 1969 at the height of the Tropicália movement. The Bahian singer displays her already-formed voice in a context of musical experimentation and cultural resistance against the Brazilian military dictatorship.
📝 Our review
Gal Costa's debut arrived when Tropicália was at its most fertile and the young Bahian singer rose to the occasion. Her voice has a clarity the Tropicalist movement did not always prioritise. Period arrangements sound dated in places, but Gal's vocal texture — that phrasing blending bossa with something wilder — is what endures. A document of a musically extraordinary Brazil.
