Buena Vista Social Club is one of those musical documents that transcends the album format: it recovered nearly forgotten Cuban musicians and presented them to the world with full dignity. Ry Cooder stayed wisely in the background. Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo and Omara Portuondo are the real protagonists. Son, bolero and guajiro played here with an authenticity no tourist product could have preserved.
