Coquimbo Chat

This is the chat for the port of Coquimbo, not the whole region: La Serena, right next door and part of the same urban area, has its own room. #coquimbo is for people from the peninsula, Tierras Blancas, La Herradura and the beach towns of the district.

Nobody is in #coquimbo today. Joining from here also opens #chile, the national room, where people are online around the clock.

The old port was built in wood by the “carpinteros de mar” when copper shipped to Swansea and British, American and French traders arrived; that district is now the Barrio Inglés. The district reaches the beaches of Tongoy and Guanaqueros, and in Guayacán the Universidad Católica del Norte campus sits beside the pier that loads iron ore from the El Romeral mine. After the Illapel earthquake of 16 September 2015, the navy’s hydrographic service measured tsunami waves of 4.5 m here. Mainland Chile runs on UTC−4 in winter and UTC−3 in summer.
