Flynn took psychological thriller to a place few dared go: the inner cruelty of a marriage, manipulation as a survival strategy, and two protagonists the reader cannot trust for a single moment. The mid-book twist remains one of the best in recent genre fiction. Not a comfortable read, and it does not try to be. For readers who have no problem with characters who deserve no sympathy.
