Carmen Mola is the pseudonym of three writers and this novel won the Premio Planeta. The Madrid of the 1834 cholera epidemic is a brilliant setting for a historical thriller: the brutality of the era and the vulnerability of the poorest people give weight to each crime. The investigation has pace and the gore is not gratuitous, though it nears the limit at points. For historical thriller fans who are not afraid of harshness.
