Ende wrote something that looks like a children's book but is in reality a manifesto about the value of imagination in the face of an adult world that rationalises everything. Bastian reading Atreyu reading Bastian: the mirror structure is elegant and works emotionally for children and for adults who remember being children. The message may feel rather explicit for older readers, but there is an honesty in that enthusiasm that is hard to resist.
