The Victorian novel that invented the modern literary heroine long before anyone had that vocabulary. Jane Eyre is not beautiful, not wealthy, not silent and does not accept humiliation: in 1847 that was close to subversive. The love story works, but what holds the book together is the protagonist's character. The famous attic secret is rather telegraphed at this point, but Brontë's narrative drive overcomes it. A reading that holds up without problems.
