The Reader
📖 Synopsis
A teenager has an affair with an older woman hiding a Nazi-era secret. Schlink and the guilt of an entire generation.
Schlink wrote the most uncomfortable novel about German guilt: not because it deals with Nazism in the abstract but because it puts the reader in the position of having loved someone who participated in it. The relationship between Michael and Hanna is ambiguous from start to finish, and that is what keeps the book alive. It is brief, dense and with an ending that each reader processes differently. For those who want a reading that does not resolve everything cleanly.
