Hosseini repeated the formula of The Kite Runner but with greater force: two Afghan women united by shared suffering under the same roof, the same man and the same war. The melodrama is explicit but rarely feels gratuitous. The brutality of women's lives in Afghanistan is narrated with a specificity that turns it into testimony. Emotionally exhausting in the best sense. Better than The Kite Runner, though less well known.
