The second instalment of A Song of Ice and Fire introduces the War of the Five Kings and raises the political complexity to a level that can be difficult to follow for uninitiated readers. Martin writes without a safety net: sympathetic characters die, morally grey ones survive, and hope is a scarce resource. The Battle of the Blackwater is one of the finest action sequences in the saga. For those already invested after A Game of Thrones, this is confirmation that Martin plays in a different league.
