Soy Gitano was the last studio album Camarón recorded in his lifetime, and the weight of that circumstance is felt. With a symphonic orchestra, the album sought to expand flamenco toward more accessible territory without losing its essence. The result is uneven—the arrangements sometimes overwhelm the voice—but when Camarón sings stripped of ornaments, as in some bulerías, the truth of the cantaor is irrefutable. A historical document and an imperfect work.
