Happier Than Ever is the album where Billie Eilish decided to grow up in public and did so with more grace than expected. The first half is almost acoustic, intimate, with Finneas building spaces for his sister's voice to breathe. The second half raises the voltage. The title track, with its transition from ballad to furious rock, is one of her career highlights. A record that does not try to be universally likeable.
