At Lumon Industries corporation, a surgical procedure called "severance" allows for the complete separation of work memories from personal ones: employees do not remember anything about their life outside the office during work hours, and nothing about their work when they leave. Mark Scout leads the Macrodata Refinement department until a new colleague starts asking questions that the system cannot answer.
